Owner: Roger Hoffmann – California
This 1954 Kurtis 500 KK is a one-off aluminum-bodied Kurtis sports car
built by Frank Kurtis, Lou Borelli, “California Bill” Fisher, and Art Ingels. It
still retains its original aluminum body built by California Metal Shaping, its
original SCOT supercharged, high torque, short rocker arm 235 Chevy inline
six, original 1932 Ford transmission (with 1937 gears), 1949 Lincoln drilled
drum brakes, and original tubular chassis with torsion bar suspension. It is
chassis # 51 of the 51 chassis kits built and sold by Kurtis. This is one of the
very few Kurtis sports cars not to have a V8 engine. Rather, for this project,
engine guru “California Bill” Fisher built up a highly evolved inline six,
offset in the chassis to accommodate the side-mounted SCOT supercharger
and Zenith carburetors. Virtually every original receipt was saved, as well
as documenting photos of the body buck of the car, the build process, and
shots of it being driven in Los Angeles. Owned for many years by noted
collector Gene Cesari, it was restored and painted black.
