2009 Award Winners

Owner: Richard Varner – California The 1970 Triumph T120 RT is the rarest of all classic Bonneville models as only 204 were manufactured. Its purpose was to homoglate the Bonneville for racing in the AMA Championship. While competitor Harley- Davidson’s Sportster displaced 750cc, Triumph’s largest twin was the 650cc Bonneville. USA distributors brought pressure to have tuner Sonny Routt produce big bore kits consisting of replacement barrels and pistons bringing displacement up to a competitive 750cc. The distributors pried the sides off of stock Bonneville shipping crates, installed the 750cc barrels and pistons while in place, stamped the engine cases with a “T”, boarded up the crates and shipped them to selected dealers and racers. This motorcycle displayed was produced in January 1970. The current owner located it at a dealer in the Midwest in complete but non-running order. It has been accurately restored using all of its original parts and period coatings.
